Gilgit Baltistan: Nationalists reject Pakistan-China accords

The chairman of the Gilgit-Baltistan United Movement (BGUM), Manzoor Hussain Parwana, said Pakistan’s decision to ignore the people of Gilgit-Baltistan in the Kashghar to Gwadar economic corridor and other mega projects with China was a big injustice with the people of the region. In a statement here, the GBUM chief said that Nawaz Sharif was not an elected representative of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and as such has no authority to enter into any agreement with a foreign country involving the dispute territory or its borders. He said that signing of the agreement by the prime minister of Pakistan with China without taking the indigenous people of Gilgit-Baltistan was against the international laws. The GBUM leader said that under the Tashkent agreement in 1962, the then prime minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto gifted 2600 square kilometers of Gilgit-Baltistan territory to China and in return the construction of the Karakorum Highway was taken up. Six decades after the creation of Pakistan, the disputed status of Gilgit-Baltistan has not been resolved and the people of the region have no representation in parliament of Pakistan. While the people of Gilgit-Baltistan remain deprived of all their rights, Pakistan’s decision to enter into so many agreements to launch projects in the disputed territory was increasing the sense of deprivation among the people of the region. He also said that both China and Pakistan should understand that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan would neither allow them to treat their area as a property on sale nor tolerate trampling of their rights.

SUB:APPEAL FOR URGENT ACTION AGAINST GROSS VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE 
DISPUTED TERRITORY OF GILGIT BALTISTAN BY IMPOSING A DRACONION LAW AND 
ANTI TERRORISM ACT.
His Excellency;
It is brought to your kind information through representatives of UNMOGIP Office /station at Gilgit about the gross violations of human rights by Government of Pakistan and its administration in Gilgit Baltistan .Details are as under.
1. That recently anti terrorist court establish at Gilgit has sentenced Baba Jan , iftikhar and other 10 activists of human and political rights for life imprisoment . Their only crime was to raise voice against brutal killings of two innocent Affecties and injuring of four person by police force at Hunza Gilgit Baltistan.
2. That this Anti Terrorism act has been imposed in Gilgit Baltistan unconsititutionally and unlawfully by Government of Pakistan while under the mandate of UNCIP resolutions , no such powers have been given to the government of Pakistan for imposing such draconion Laws in Gilgit Baltistan just to supress the political and human rights activities.
3. That under the UNCIP resolutions government of Pakistan has just to assist the local self Government in Gilgit Baltistan in running internal affairs of this disputed region . While the Government of Pakistan has unilaterally imposed barbaric laws to supress the political movements and recent punishments to the political activists is an example of such violations.
4. That this act /action of Government of Pakistan is Gross violation of UN hunam rights charter as well as UN security Council and UNCIP resolutions.
In the light of above facts,you are requested to kindly take serious notice of these gross violations of human rights in Gilgit Baltistan and directions may be issues to Pakistan Government for withdrawal of fabricated criminal cases againt Baba jan,iftikhar and other political activists of Gilgit-Baltistan.Further directions may aslo be issued for withdrawal of barbaric law of Anti-Terrorism act from Gilgit-Baltistan .Which has been imposed in this disputed region directly by islamabad.
