Gilgit Baltistan: SAC Appointment Angers

Wednesday, 28 January 2009
Recent appointment to SAC angers local population.

Below is an article published by UNPO

In reaction to the recent appointment of former Supreme Court of Pakistan judge to the Supreme Appellate Court, or SAC, or Gilit Baltistan, the Chairman of the Gilgit Baltistan United Movement stated:

“The rulers of Pakistan are hell-bent on strengthening the roots of colonial system of governance in Gilgit Baltistan but the voice for self-rule rising against the unjust and cruel means of the rulers is indicative of a big nationalist revolution in the region.”

The leaders of the Gilgit Baltistan community have deemed this appointment “illegal” and “an extension of the de-facto rule” of Pakistani authorities over the region. The move has also been viewed as an insult to the Giligt Baltistan and a false front for democratic legitimacy.

They are calling for the local population to speak out against this move with the hopes of moving for an indigenous judge to fill the seat.
