Gilgit Baltistan: Demands relief package for the snow-affected areas.

Skardu Baltistan:3rd January 2009

“The masses of Gilgit Baltistan are living a miserable life due to sever cold and record snowfall but the government has done nothing to help them resolve their miseries.”
These views were expressed by Manzoor Hussain Parwana chairman Gilgit Baltistan United Movement while talking to the journalists here at Skardu.

He said that the masses of the region were dying of severe cold as there was no fuel available in the region except timber which too was not available in a sufficient amount.
The condition of the basic health units established in various rural areas of the region was abysmal as they lacked medicine and other health care facilities.

Heavy snowfall had disrupted the transport system so the people living in the far-flung rural areas did not even have to option to access to secondary health care facilities established in the district headquarters. Food and other basic utilities too were going to unavailable.

He demanded of the government to announce a relief package for the masses of Gilgit Baltistan. If Pakistan is not capable to running the affairs of the region, why it is clinging on to the region? He asked.

Parwana slammed the bureaucracy and said the non-local officers were the root cause of these miseries of the masses. Non- locals are given the reins of the region who have not even visited the region before being bestowed with key posts. How will they serve the region as they don’t have the slightest idea of the problems of the masses?
